What is Zylon?
Zylon is a golden carbon fiber that has the highest tensile strength and modulus of elasticity among organic fibers. It finds application in the shafts of bulletproof vests and Formula One tires due to its exceptional strength. Zylon is so robust that even in a collision, tires reinforced with it won’t detach. However, Zylon’s high density makes it challenging to fine-tune the shaft’s weight for multiple adjustments.
How strong is Zylon?
When comparing materials at 1.5mm thickness, nylon is said to withstand approximately 330-350lbs. In contrast, Zylon is an exceptionally robust material, capable of withstanding the weight of a compact car–2,300lbs–at the same thickness.
How is Zylon used in shafts?
Zylon is very heavy compared to other materials, so it requires a lot of carbon to be wound around it to function as a shaft.
Zylon is very flexible and difficult to break, but once it is bent out of shape, it cannot be returned to its original shape. To address this issue, the ICHI series uses Zylon in only one of the nine layers to strike a balance of performance and practicality.
